The Bute Highland Games’ Pipe Bands’ Competition is carried out under the auspices of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) and run by the Glasgow & West of Scotland Branch. All bands need to be registered with the RSPBA in order to compete and there are normally competitions in each of the following RSPBA grades:

Novice Juvenile

Grades 1, 2, 2 MSR, 3, 4 and 4 MSR

Drum Majors

Marching & Discipline

Further details can be obtained from the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association’s website – www.rspba.org

The bands’ names; names of their pipe majors and respective tartans; together with the selection of music to be performed, are published by grade and start time in our annual Games’ programme available for purchase on the day. Each grade features a selection of trophies and cash prizes for the winners and the placed bands.

The RSPBA selects the judges for the competitions consisting of a minimum of a piping judge, a drumming judge, an ensemble judge and a drum major judge. One of the criteria to be a judge is the need to have been a member of a Grade 1 winning band.
