George Hanson

GEORGE GAVIN HANSON (LOCAL BUSINESSMAN)

George Hanson is a local businessman born and brought up in Rothesay (a Brandane). George started his joinery and carpentry apprenticeship at the age of 16 with Mount Stuart Maintenance Workshop Department and finished by serving his last year at Mount Stuart House.

After finishing his apprenticeship George worked on various contracts in Rothesay including the Moat/Library Centre and the first renovation of Ballochgoy. He worked as Foreman at the new build development at Barone Road in the seventies and worked on the mainland on various large contracts including a short spell at Ardyne but always commuting from the Island. At the age of 30 George achieved his ambition in starting up his own business and has never looked back and has steadily built up George Hanson Building Contractors Ltd to what it is today. His company has carried out many large contracts in Rothesay from private housing developments at Craignethan, Glen Royal, Crichton View, Montfort Apartments and his latest Town Centre Development at Guilford Square. The company has also carried out large Social Housing Contracts for Fyne Homes, including the new Ballochgoy Scheme and a large block of flats on Bishop Street. He has been one of the Islands’ major employers for many years with a regular workforce of around 40 local employees but his proudest boast is that he has taken on and fully trained well over 40 apprentices in his 35 years in Business.

George has a profound love and pride of the Island and has bought and renovated many dilapidated buildings, and in some cases, virtually derelict buildings and has fully restored them into modern traditional accommodation. He has also bought and renovated a number of flatted properties throughout the Island.

Married to Davina for 46 years they have 3 children Steven, Susan, and Lauren, and have 6 grandchildren. They have always lived in Rothesay and at the ripe old age of 67 he still has two new housing projects on the go and is still pursuing his dream of making the Island a better place to live, work and visit.
