Message from the Chair

DanI have for the second time been appointed to Chair the Board and organising committee of Bute Highland Games.  To hold this office once was a privilege, to be asked to do it for a second time is indeed an honour.   I would like first of all to say a very sincere thanks to Mike Dodds for his stewardship during the past two years.  Each individual who holds this position brings their own unique style to the job and leaves their particular mark on the organisation.   I also acknowledge the loyal support that Mike's wife Ivy provided during his two year tenure and hope that they will both continue to support Bute Highland Games in the future.

As you can see above this year's games will be held at the usual venue, The Stadium, High Street Rothesay on Saturday 18 August 2012.   Please put an entry in your diary now so that you do not miss this great day out for all the family.   Our average gate is around 4000 with almost 1000 competitors (in total) in all disciplines.  Let’s see if we can make this a record year.  We were mindful of that other great sporting event the Olympic Games in London when we chose our Chieftain for this year's Games, our very own Olympian, Rhona Simpson (see below for more detail of her remarkable achievements).  I have known Rhona since she was but a "glint in her parents eyes" My wife Nikki and I were guests at their wedding!!  Rhona is the niece of the late Willie Hunter and his wife Mhairi.  He would have been so proud to see Rhona as guest of honour.   I know that Mhairi is thrilled.

Rhona is a delightful and charming young lady who has that inner belief and steely determination that is the hallmark of a world class athlete.  We are indeed fortunate to have her as Chieftain and I am sure you will enjoy meeting and chatting to her on Games Day.   May I take this opportunity to thank in advance, those individuals seen and unseen, who work so hard every year to ensure the continuing success of Bute Highland Games. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday 18th August, whether you are local or have travelled across the World to be with us.
